Potential seen in humble squirt

Potential seen in humble squirt

Squishy sea squirts like those hanging off Nelson’s wharves are at the heart of a new $1.05 million Cawthron Institute research project that could lead to the development of new drugs.

The Government is providing the money, to be spread over three years, for Nelson-based research led by chemical ecologist Dr Andrew Fidler.

It could lead to new ways of screening marine organisms for potentially beneficial chemicals.

Dr Fidler said sea squirts lived by filtering vast volumes of sea water for bacteria and plankton, and had evolved mechanisms to detect and break down toxic chemicals in their diet. “The immense complexity and huge variety of such natural marine toxins means they have long been regarded as a rich source of potential drugs.”

Dr Fidler has worked at Cawthron for five years and had worked on genetics for the institute’s mussel-breeding programme and with DOC on kakapo research.

He said the sea squirt project, to be paid for by the Government’s New Economy Research Fund for research with long-term commercial potential, would involve “a whole bunch of species” including a “clear, ghostly-looking thing” of the genus Ciona that was found at the Nelson Marina.

Preliminary research had been going on for 18 months, he said.

Cawthron’s manager of aquaculture and biotechnology, Danette Olsen, said Dr Fidler’s research was “not only scientifically groundbreaking, but also potentially lucrative”.

“Current methods used for screening the marine environment are like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack and have a very low chance of success

However, the latest research

However, the latest research shows that women average 6 hours and forty minutes of sleep during the week and 7 hours on the weekend. Besides the extra work that women have to contend with (helping with homework, laundry, cooking, etc.) and the many concerns that keep them from sleep, women are also be kept awake by – small children who wake during the night, teenagers coming home late, aging parents who get up during the night.

What can we do to sleep more peacefully and longer? Here are some hints:

1. Eliminate noise from your bedroom. Bedroom sounds should be low and consistent. Try earplugs.

2. Keep your room dark by using dark fabric on your windows.

OUT TO LUNCH; In praise of old-fashioned seasons

OUT TO LUNCH; In praise of old-fashioned seasons

0 Comments | Press, The; Christchurch, New Zealand, Jul 28, 2010 | by Kate FRASER

Last week I went out to lunch in the suburbs. Meshino Cafe in St Albans was once a large house on the corner of Rutland St and Hawkesbury Avenue, and its new life as neighbourhood meeting place, coffee stop/licensed cafe must make it a public amenity up there with parks and swimming pools.

The place bustles with customers popping in for a coffee, snacks from the cabinet and hearty meals. A large blackboard menu behind the service counter is too much to take in at once, but there are sit-down and read menus and a wine list.

Reservation signs spot the room and those on a time-limited lunch break will find it best to book, or get there early.

The menu is a comforting read. It suggests the chef likes the style of Hugh Fernley Whittingstall and his River Cottage TV series. Last week the list included a chicken pie, chicken involtini with mash (and according to the menu ‘asparagus’ which flew in the face of any ‘seasonal’ persuasions but green beans were a reasonable if not exactly seasonal substitute), lamb shanks and a steak sandwich, and daily specials that included not only the expected soup and fish but surprisingly risotto, and game.

Our game of the day dish was wild pork sausages in a potato and cabbage broth. Could anyone with even a spit of Irish in the ancestral history pass that? Not me. Thank you Meshino for the best sausages to have ever come my way. I liked the cabbage broth idea too, especially with the inclusion of potatoes, but it wasn’t easy to eat. I should have remembered my father’s habit of tearing bread into pieces and soaking them into his soup. And I should have asked for a spoon.

The chicken involtini – an Italian dish meaning little rolls – was prepared in the classic manner; boned chicken thighs wrapped around a stuffing of garlic and rosemary with fine strips of bacon in turn wrapping the chicken pieces. Again nicely cooked but alas my lunch companion was one who dislikes eating meat and vegetables from a bowl rather than a plate. Still, a minor quibble as the food showed finesse in both presentation and flavour.

It was a red wine kind of day and Meshino’s small but quite wide- ranging wine list offered good reds by the glass, including a friendly fruity Cotes du Rhone that went with both wild pork and tame chicken.

Whether it is because of a very busy service or the popularity of takeaway coffees everything happens at the counter

There is a reason for

There is a reason for this, although it is an impressive car and beautiful, it has a reputation for lacking acceleration as a sports car. It has a good top speed and is capable of travelling at over 100 mph all day long.

The fabulous manual 541S

But all the original road test reports were based on the automatic version (this automatic gearbox although developed by Rolls Royce lost an awful lot of performance) – it is such a pity that the manual version was never tested!

Between 1960 and 1962 Jensen built 127, in total of 541S cars, out of these only 22 were manual drive. The manual is a gem of a car! The most luxurious car of all the 541 range, and what is not generally known, these manual drive cars with the Lacock-de-Normanville overdrive are very fast cars indeed. They would have earned a much better reputation from a road test than the one they have from the automatic version.

Extra design features

The 541S has certain unusual design features, adjustable front seat arm rests fitted to each door, the Bevelift jack, kept in the boot, was designed for use through the floor of the car in front of each front seat.

However, even though they changed the manufacturing

However, even though they changed the manufacturing of the devices, they continued to sell the defective defibrillators without notifying the doctors or patients of the defects.

Although Guidant has conducted this recall, they have not yet advised whether implanted defibrillators should be replaced. The Food and Drug Administration has advised patients to take the following steps:

1. Contact your doctor immediately to determine if your defibrillator is a model being recalled by Guidant.

2. Keep your regularly scheduled doctor appointments.

3. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience an electrical shock from your defibrillator.

4. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice a beeping sound coming from your defibrillator.

If you believe that you have been administered a defective defibrillator, the first thing you need to do is consult your doctor.

They are unaware of our

They are unaware of our troops in the Middle East or our economy problems here at home.

What sustains you during tough times? Do you have a network of support? What are the things that comfort you when life seems to be filling your plate with more of the things you find unappetizing? Now is the perfect time to focus on simple daily rituals and pleasures as we live through more turbulent days ahead. Let’s call these, recipes for rapture.

Every good recipe must include the right ingredients. Perhaps, it’s buying flowers each week to put in your home or, on your desk at work. Most grocery stores have flowers available and you can include these weekly flowers as part of the menu for “feeding” your spirit. Maybe, it’s taking a break from watching the news or reading the newspaper. Instead, listen to some music that you find particularly soothing. Try keeping a dream journal to capture your dreams or create a personal altar in the corner of a room. You can mix and match ‘ingredients’ according to your particular taste.

When you have finished washing the

When you have finished washing the whole car, use a chamois to dry off your car. A chamois will remove water quickly and not leave lint which terry cloths are prone to do. Routinely washing your car will remove things like bird droppings, bugs and industrial fallout which are all detrimental to your car?s paint and finish. If there is road tar or stubborn bugs left after washing you should use a bug and tar remover prior to waxing and polishing.

It is a good idea to follow washing with the application of a cleaner/polish. This will remove minor imperfections in the paint caused by the environment and sun damage, remove minor scratches, and provide a good surface for car wax or car polish. Follow the directions on the bottle. Basically you apply cleaner wax as you would wax ? in a circular motion and you treat one area or panel at a time. Use modest pressure and then let dry to a whitish haze. Buff with a clean cloth towel and reapply as necessary.

Then you need to decide whether to use car wax or a polymer car polish.

You can find a

You can find a few very powerful meditation techniques in my article section.

Yoga:

Another excellent way to find relaxation. Yoga is a method that helps reducing blood pressure faster than many other relaxation techniques. There are many different types of yoga, so that you will have to find the type that suits you best.

Exercise:

By exercising you change your physiology, you change your body chemistry and this will ultimately change the way you look at life. Exercise can work as a type of meditation. By focusing on the physical effort you?re performing you will notice that all kinds of unpleasant feelings will disappear after approx. 20 minutes. However I personally recommend to use exercise in conjunction with one of the other relaxation methods.

Massage:

A great relaxation technique. However you will always need someone else to be involved, you are depending on a good massage therapist AND you need to be able to completely surrender to this person.

Breathing:

Breathing is very effective and probably the simplest way to relax. It has a very strong influence on our body, mind and moods.
There are several different breathing techniques that can help us to relax.
